Duck Chase

A reoccurring Spring event is to help Mallard mothers with their young.

DUCK chase 2014!

A Mallard mother was sighted during lunch time in the inner court garden with approx. 11-14 ducklings under her wings. Quickly, a Mallard pursuit team of Maja, Charlotte, Sonja, Kristina, Nayyer and myself was summoned and equipped with a big paper box we were ready for the chase.

As the mother Mallard seemed to be looking for a passage through the student lunch room, we considered to herd them through the building to the outside but the mother instead hid in the garden bushes.

Eventually I managaed to grab the mother and put her in the box, and then chaos broke out as the ducklings ran in all directions. They are really very fast runners! Kristina was very successful and quickly caught 5 of them. After a while we had 9. But where were the rest?

During our search, we discovered yet another Mallard still nesting. Behind her were remaining 3 ducklings of which not all were caught. We agreed upon that we would come back later looking for them.

The release party took place at the nearest pond on the Campus area. Everyone was relieved and happy!

Later Sonja and I caught three more. They were rejoined with the rest in the pond as mother Mallard accepted them all.

HAPPY END….

DUCK chase 2015!

12 ducklings were rescued after a long chase around the inner court garden. Now everyone is happy swimming in the Campus pond.

DUCK chase 2016!

This Spring a Mallard mother with 6 young had stopped right outside our goods delivery door and could not get further. The passage was blocked by restructuring and building work including intermittent blasting! Maria caught the mother, handed her to bird expert Mikael. A labcoat was used to collect the ducklings which ended up in a box. Mikael and Johnny made this year’s pond realease. Yet another happy Molbiol rescue operation!
