Hans Boman was appointed professor in Microbiology 1966. Umeå was the first university in Sweden to get a professorship in Microbiology. Hans Boman´s research interest was penicillin resistance in Escherichia coli. At the same time associated professor John Sjöquist was working with proteins and protein chemistry.
